More from the crunchy hippie parents forum:

Someone started a thread asking if people would “ever own a gun.” The specific scenario in question involves rural dwellers with a husband who is going to be traveling a lot, and they’re considering getting a gun for home and livestock defense.

Of course, responses have been entertaining (and not all mind-boggling, there was one “An armed society is a polite society!” response and several have been in agreement) but this one takes the cake:

Of course NO

i prefer someone to shoot me that to kill somebody.
hopefully in greece where I live we don’t have very high criminality

That middle line – “i prefer someone to shoot me that to kill somebody” – how in the hell do you get there, as a living creature? How do you lose all sense of self-preservation? How do you completely lose your will to survive?

I don’t get it.

They’ve been so sheltered in their life that they’ve never encountered or even had to think about real risk of physical harm from another person.

That or they’re just stupid.

Maybe both.

Some people simply have no sense of self-preservation left.

They honestly believe that it is something that can’t happen to them…

Here’s a thought for you..why is it that they have no sense of self preservation left? My vote..they were taught to be that way.

Laurel, they clearly just want peace. The emoticon proves it.

I wish I had that hippie-board evil grin emoticon right now….

on a related note, just found out that you can get a license for a handgun here.

i believe there has been somewhere in the region of 1500ish issued.

pfsh.

and mosta the country/farming folk seem to have shotguns and the odd rifle.

so maybe you will be able ta move here after all.

i dunno how you even go about applying for a license, and even though i spend mosta my time in our capital city, i’ve yet to see a gun shop.

sure pellet guns (BB for you) were only just decriminalised last year.

a guy i knew from school even has a criminal record since he was 14 for “illegal possession of a firearm” or somesuch because he shot/shot at his neighbours cat with a BB he brought back from spain.

There is a religion called Janism that takes that philosophy to the limit. Their policy of nonviolence extends to not eating the roots of plants because it increases the chances of harming some organism that lives in the soil or roots.

My officemate subscribes to that belief system and my conversations with her about it are “interesting”.

People who say they would rather die than kill someone are speaking from ignorance; they have never had their life threatened, or they would realize they’re talking shit. There are two reactions I’ve seen to life-threatening situations, fighting back or collapsing in fear (not from altruism).
